Amy Bartels Roe, encourages us to take a breath during this busy season to give thanks for our many gifts as she shares about one of the best gifts in her own life, The Mustard Seed Shelter. In this presentation, Amy will share stories of how love is truly the key ingredient for helping the women and women with children transform their lives and become successful members of our great Saginaw community and how each and everyone of us is and can be a part of the vision of Mustard Seed Shelter and every organization who serve those in our community who are experiencing homelessness.

The Mustard Seed Shelter is the recipient of WIL Gives Back for 2019.

Amy Bartels Roe has served as the executive director at Mustard Seed Shelter in Saginaw, MI since 2014. In this role, she leads a team of paid staff and many volunteers to live the agency’s mission, which is: “We water the seed of inner strength in homeless women so they can make a better life for themselves and for their children.”

Amy began volunteering with Mustard Seed Shelter from its very beginning in 1995. At that time, she was in college and working part-time as a youth minister. Amy has a bachelor of arts degree in sociology, with a minor in social work.

Following college, Amy’s role as volunteer changed (from painting walls, pulling up carpet, cooking and so on) to training our volunteers in a strength-based approach to work with the guests we serve. Prior to becoming the executive director in 2014, Amy worked as a social worker for Boysville and then Lutheran Child and Family Service for 12 years. She also served as pastoral minister at a local church. Many community outreach programs Amy began are still in existence today. She has similarly planted and cultivated many “seeds” for Mustard Seed Shelter and has helped widen and strengthen the organization’s base of support to prepare for future growth.
